What is Direct Cremation?
A ‘Direct Cremation’ or ‘Direct Burial’ service simply means that your loved one is cremated or buried without mourners attending a funeral service at the Crematorium or Cemetery.
The cremation or burial will take place as soon as the necessary paperwork is completed, at a time and date that is agreeable with you, usually about two weeks after the death.
You are welcome and invited to say goodbye to your loved one at our Chapel of Rest. The coffin can be open or closed and your loved one can either be dressed in their own clothes or in one of our gowns.

- The opportunity to follow behind us as we take your loved one on their final journey to Downs Crematorium and watch as they are carried into the crematorium.
- No extra charges and no hidden costs.
What is the cost and what is included in the service?
A Direct Cremation service is currently £1,995 fully inclusive of all costs and includes:
- All Cremation fees at Downs Crematorium paid on your behalf.
- Provision of a simple unpolished oak effect coffin
- Visiting your loved one in our Chapel of Rest
- Chauffeur Driven Hearse and Full Team of Bearers to carry your loved one into the crematorium.
- Guidance on the Registration of Death.
- Completion of all legal necessities and documentation relating to the funeral on your behalf.
- Provision of your loved ones’ ashes in a presentation box.
Please note that the funeral account must be paid in full prior to the Direct Cremation service.

We first used Bungard in 2018 for my Father-in-Laws funeral and had no hesitation in using them again when my Mother-in-law sadly passed away. From the moment we contacted Richard, he and his team showed great compassion and couldn't do enough to help us through this difficult time. we had a limited time in Brighton to arrange things and Richard bent over backwards to fit us in and carryout everything to our wishes. On the day of the funeral, the whole team were amazing, compassionate, friendly and very professional. I can't recommend them enough. If I could give them mo0re than 5 stars, I would.

October 30, 2025I first came across Bungards when I needed to contact a Funeral Directors in March 2025 after being told that my Grandmother was nearing the end. They were brilliant, explained the process and, for me, most importantly said that they were willing to help, even if we decided to go elsewhere when the time came. Fast forward to September 2025 and I received the call that nobody wants to have - our Grandmother had passed. Zoe was there to help us through the next stages. Zoe was very kind and, from the beginning, metaphorically speaking, held our hands through the process of preparing the funeral. Nothing was too much, Zoe was with us all the way, guiding us as to who we’d like to perform the ceremony, flowers, music, the crematorium, tracing other family’s ashes and more. We couldn’t have wished for a better service from a Funeral Directors.
